WORKSHOP I -- SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2007, 12:00pm to 3:00pm
The Business of IIS: Developing Consensus-Based Best Practice Guidelines for Improving IIS Operations
INTRODUCTION: This workshop will provide you with an overview of approaches that allow for effectively combining the diverse experience of the IIS community in solving problems and developing consensus-based guidance for IIS operations. These approaches will be illustrated with detailed case studies of two important IIS topics: vaccination level deduplication and the management of patient immunization statuses. Additionally, the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII) will demonstrate using business processes analysis to define the business requirements of information systems that serve public health goals.
OBJECTIVES: To describe approaches to analyze and improve IIS operations and to present case studies of implementation of these approaches in two particular areas of IIS operations: vaccine level deduplication and management of patient statuses. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand why techniques for business analysis, modeling, re-engineering, and facilitation are needed to develop effective busienss requirements specifications.
- Understand how modern business engineering and facilitation techniques can be applied to the collaborative consensus-based analysis of IIS operations and the development of best practice guidelines.
- Describe two areas of IIS operations that used business modeling and facilitation techniques to develop best practice recommendations.
- Understand the collaborative approach used by PHII to identify problems, involve stakeholders, define common work/business processes, and subsequently define the requirements of information systems to serve program goals.
TOPICS: The workshop topics are designed to be presented by knowledge experts that will share their efforts in addressing specific themes
- Analysis and modeling of IIS operations and processes
- Case study: Vaccine Level Deduplication in IIS
- Case study: Managment of Immunization Statuses for a Patient in IIS
- A collaborative approach to problem solving
TARGET AUDIENCE: This workshop is for programmatic and technical/operational personnel involved in creating or mainting an IIS who need to have knowledge of 1) efficient ways to develop IIS guidelines, and 2) specific best practices for IIS processes.
SPEAKERS:
- Warren Williams, CDC/NCIRD/IRSB, workshop leader
- Dr. Alan Hinman, PHII
- Therese Hoyle (MI)
- David Lyalin, Northrup Grumman
- Rob Savage (WI)
- Elaine Lowery (CO)
- Sherry Riddick (WA) invited

WORKSHOP II -- SUNDAY, MARCH 4, 2007, 3:00pm to 6:00pm
Using IIS to Improve Vaccine Management and Accountability Functions
INTRODUCTION: This workshop will provide an opportunity for the sharing of models and best practice techniques and will highlight the benefits of using IIS in the Vaccine Management Business Improvement Plan (VMBIP) initiative to improve overall vaccine management and accountability functions in immunization programs. Use cases will be reviewed and discussed and IIS programs currently developing and/or implementing vaccine management modules will be presented. Members of the CDC National Center for Public Health Informatics (NCPHI) will provide an overview of the long-term goals for the VMBIP. Workshop participants will explore how IIS can play a role in the implementation of the VODS (Vaccine Ordering Distribution System).
OBJECTIVES: The workshop objectives are to outline vacccine management and accountability functions that can utilitze IIS capabilities in support of achieving the goals of the VMBIP and to show models and outcomes of the IIS programs that are implementing these strategies and functions. At the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Understand what VMBIP is and why it is needed.
- Be clear about the overall goals of VMBIP and where their IIS can play a role.
- Learn about IIS projects that are implementing vaccine management and accountability strategies and what the challenges and outcomes are.
- Begin an action plan of next steps that will help promote use of their IIS in the VMBIP.
The workshop presenters will provide time for open discussion, problem solving and action planning. Questions will be encouraged through the workshop. Attendees will receive a workbook with resources and reference lists for use back home.
TARGET AUDIENCE: IIS managers and staff, Immunization Program managers and staff, VFC staff, and technical/operational staff who are interested in furthering the use of IIS within the framework of improving vaccine management and accountability functions.
SPEAKERS:
- Therese Hoyle (MI), workshop leader
- Zina Kleyman (NJ)
- Sherry Riddick (WA)
- Jan Hicks-Thomson (WA)
