Tracking High Risk Children To Maximize Timely Delivery of Influenza VaccineThe following excerpt was taken from the December ECBT Newsletter.Vaccine Clinics are the most efficient way of delivering influenza vaccine. Below are strategies used to successfully identify high risk children and maximize delivery of influenza vaccines during each fall season. Mountain Park Health Center is a federally funded community health care center in Phoenix, Arizona. The pediatric department is comprised of eight pediatricians, eight medical assistants, a nurse practitioner and an immunization program nurse. Identification of "high risk" patients is completed year round. These patients are identified through internal software systems that allow for patient sorting. A record of every influenza dose is downloaded into the Arizona State Immunization Information System (ASIIS) the day it is administered. The system will provide two printouts: one for the parent and one for the patient’s chart. The printouts include information on the influenza vaccination just administered and the date that the next dose is due. Electronic tracking and provider commitment are the most important elements in increasing pediatric influenza rates. For parents to partner in the effort to increase influenza vaccination rates, they must fully understand the seriousness and danger of influenza infection in young children. Electronic tracking of high-risk children targets these children instantly. Carol Joyce, Immunization Program Nurse |
