An Added Bonus to the 2001 Immunization Registry Conference:Pre- and Post-Conference WorkshopsThe National Immunization Program's (NIP) 2001 Immunization Registry Conference will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas, July 9-11, 2001. The conference will provide a forum for providing information, sharing experiences, and promoting the development and increased use of immunization registries. Topics to be covered include: Privacy & Confidentiality; Private Provider and Family Issues; Resources; Measuring Progress; Systems Integration; Technical & Operational Issues; Data Use; and Collaborations & Partnerships. In addition, there will be a Round Table luncheon session that will delve into these issues further. Information on the conference can be found at the NIP web site: www.cdc.gov/nip/registry. Several pre- and post-conference meetings are being offered that will provide in-depth presentations and discussions of interest to registry coordinators and developers. On Sunday, July 8, the American Immunization Registry Association (AIRA) will be conducting two training sessions: (1) Advocacy Strategies for Building Support, from 12:00-3:00 p.m. This interactive workshop will cover key issues confronting state and local registries; rules, regulations, and perceptions of advocacy and lobbying and how they impact immunization registry employees; barriers to advocacy and strategies to address them; how to develop a clear message around the issues on which you want to advocate; and how to build support for your registry through coalition building. (2) Integrating an Immunization Registry With Other Childhood Information Systems, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. This interactive workshop will cover the rationale and benefits for integrating public health information systems; steps to consider when integrating public health information systems; challenges to integration of public health systems and strategies to address them. Information on registration and fees can be found at the AIRA web site: www.immregistries.org. On Wednesday, July 11, the National Immunization Program will host a session on Tools for Immunization Registry Data Exchange: Using Health Level 7 (HL7) Standards, from 12:00-6:00 p.m. This interactive workshop will cover a basic understanding of HL7 messaging; the design and functionality of the HL7 tool; and a description of the ways registries can use the tool in their systems. A copy of the software product will be distributed. This tool is in the public domain and available for all who want to use it. No fees or registration is required. On Thursday, July 12, NIP will also be hosting a session on Tools for Testing: HL7 Messages for Conformity to Standard, from 9:00-10:00 a.m. During this session, software that was developed to validate the conformity of HL7 messages to the standard will be demonstrated. This tool allows registries to validate their individual HL7 messages to ensure that they conform to the standard. Also on Thursday, July 12, AIRA and the Committee on Immunization Registry Standards and Electronic Transactions (CIRSET), along with NIP, will be hosting a meeting of vendors of healthcare technology and developers of immunization registries to explore the potential for two-way data exchange between provider software and state and community immunization registries. Continuing collaboration is needed to ensure that implementation plans meet messaging requirements that will enable registry developers, vaccination providers, and vendors of physician systems to achieve interoperability that was not previously available. No fees or registration are required. Source: Cathy Stout, Systems Development Branch, Data Management Division, NIP, CDC, cstout@cdc.gov |
