CDC and AKC Contribute to Success of California's 13th Statewide Registry Meeting

The 13th California Statewide Immunization Information System (SIIS) meeting was held April 2-3, 2001, in Sacramento, CA. This was our largest meeting to date with a hundred people participating, including local, regional, and state level public health staff, Nevada registry staff, private providers, representatives of local health officers, maternal and child health, county health executives, large HMOs, consultants and vendors. The meeting got a big boost from participation by the CDC National Immunization Program (NIP) and All Kids Count (AKC). In the opening plenary session, while our California speakers focused on two topics, where we are in registry development in California and where we're going, speakers from CDC NIP provided a valuable national perspective. Angela Salazar spoke on the state of immunization registries nationwide and Susan Abernathy informed us about HL7 standards for immunization registries. David Ross, Director of AKC, facilitated an important discussion on future registry development, in which participants were able to share their ideas, questions, and concerns about the shaping of California's statewide registry system.

In order to address the diversity of interests and expertise, two tracks, programmatic and technical, were used in the afternoon sessions. Concurrent programmatic and technical sessions included presentations and panel discussions. Participants also had the opportunity to attend SIIS committee meetings. The SIIS Provider Relations Committee debuted their "Private Provider Recruitment Guidelines for Immunization Registries." Terry Hastings of AKC, participating in a panel on private provider outreach, provided AKC's toolkit and guide: "Increasing Provider Participation in Immunization Registries."

The next morning's plenary session opened with an inspiring talk by Dave Ross on "Moving Forward, Making Progress." Regional registry representatives found a receptive audience, as they shared stories (at times, rueful and humorous) of progress and lessons learned in this year of transition from local to regional registries in California. The SIIS meeting ended with the morning session on the second day and was followed by software users group meetings in the afternoon. The participants were pleased with the conference, and California would like to thank CDC and AKC for helping to make this a successful and rewarding meeting.
