President's ColumnHave you been getting questions from health care providers or health plans about HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996)? Health care providers and health plans are, or soon will be, assessing the impact of HIPAA on their ability to participate in immunization registries. As an immunization registry staff person, it's important for you to know where you can go to get accurate information about HIPAA to pass on to your immunization registry partners. Gail Horlick at CDC has been tracking HIPAA closely and has recently developed an informative slide presentation on HIPAA, as well as a brief statement entitled "Disclosure to Public Health under the HIPAA Privacy Rule." These are excellent resources that can help you maintain the participation of your health care partners. To view and download these resources, go to the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/registry/ss/gh3.ppt. You may also go to the AIRA website http://www.immregistries.org/, which has a link to the CDC website. Many thanks to Gail for staying on top of this for us! (Amy Metroka, AIRA President, April 2001.) Note: CDC responded to the February 2001 President's Column. You can view the response on the AIRA website at www.immregistries.org. Under Spotlight, click on "CDC Response to AIRA on Technical Working Group Issues." |
