New Technical Advisory Bulletin (TAB) Document

The Standards and Interoperability Steering Committee (SISC) is pleased to announce the publication of a new technical advisory bulletin (TAB). This document builds on and further clarifies specifications in the HL7 v2.5.1 Implementation Guide for Immunization Messaging, Release 1.5 and Addendum, October 2018.

The new TAB, Messaging Non-patient Person Names, details requirements related to the following non-patient person name fields:

  • PID-6/QPD-5, Mother’s Maiden Name
  • NK1-2, Responsible Person Name
  • ORC-10, Entered By
  • ORC-12, Ordering Provider
  • RXA-10, Administering Provider

This bulletin clarifies expectations related to preserving space(s) and hyphen(s) and support for special characters when submitting and processing these non-patient person names to support accurate representation.

Implementers are expected to use TABs to support the development and maintenance of HL7 exchange capabilities and interfaces. Unless otherwise indicated, organizations shall use the TAB specifications to support implementation, as soon as feasible, working with exchange partners as needed to test and/or confirm changes. Review the TAB Overview for additional information about these documents.

Climb Higher with AIRA’s DQ Resource Hub

Improving the quality of your data can feel overwhelming! Just as scaling a mountain takes planning and focus, so does improving the quality of data in your IIS.

AIRA’s Data Quality Resource Hub is your interactive guide to navigating the data quality landscape. Created to communicate the overall data quality ecosystem, it also enables individual jurisdictions to map their own specific data quality improvement plans. Whether you’re new to IIS data quality, planning your next steps, or training staff, the Hub helps you chart your unique path with timely, relevant resources. How you use it is up to you!

The DQ Resource Hub offers three different paths for IIS jurisdictions to embark on to improve their data quality: IIS Blueprint Characteristics, Data Quality Topics, and Data Touch Points. Explorers can choose their approach and build a personalized resource list—or download the full set.

The DQ Resource Hub also offers participants in AIRA’s Data at Rest (DAR) program the option of viewing their IIS-specific DAR results to support targeted improvements. DAR participants can request a custom version of the tool featuring their DAR results by emailing [email protected].

Need help getting started? Check out AIRA’s companion resource, Charting Your Course: A Data Quality Adventure. Within this guide, you’ll discover a quick eight-question quiz to discover your IIS trail mascot, discussion questions, and a sample action plan template to bring your goals to life.
