New! Data Quality Guide Released

AIRA is excited to announce that a new guide, Data Quality Practices to Monitor and Evaluate Data at Rest, is now published on the AIRA website.

The purpose of the guide is to provide practical guidance on techniques, methodologies, and processes for IIS to use in assessing the quality of data at rest. The primary audience for the guide includes IIS managers and staff with responsibility for ensuring IIS data quality. This may include data quality specialists, data exchange staff, and/or interoperability or interface coordinators. Immunization program staff in positions that interact with the IIS data may also find the guide of interest.

We hope you find this resource valuable. If you have any questions regarding this document, please contact Nichole Lambrecht

"The Public Health Advantage": The Popular AIRA National Meeting Keynote Via Webinar

For everyone who was not able to hear Scott Burris’s keynote at the AIRA 2018 National Meeting (and anyone who would like to hear it again), join us for a webinar reprise of the presentation on Thursday, December 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. EST. The webinar will include steps to become a better health policy advocate, including understanding our role in policy and law development; crafting richer messages; and being a better messenger. There will also be time after the presentation for questions and discussion. For more information about Scott Burris, please click here.

AIRA Representatives Attend Security and Identity Meeting Held by NAPHSIS

In mid-November, NAPHSIS (the National Association of Public Health Statistics and Information Systems) held a two-day meeting to explore topics related to security and identity. NAPHSIS is the member association that supports vital records and vital events across 57 jurisdictions. AIRA staff Rebecca Coyle and Mary Beth Kurilo attended the meeting to bring back lessons learned from the vital records and health statistics arena that may be applicable to the IIS community.

The conference brought together a broad range of professionals, including:

  • 89 representatives from 39 state and local vital records offices
  • 30 personnel from federal partners, including the Department of State/Passport, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, Transportation Security Administration, and Social Security Administration
  • 16 partners from AAMVA and the motor vehicle offices in the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia
  • And representatives from the Document Security Alliance, IDEMIA, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and NASPO International, among many other partner organizations

The meeting discussed new areas of identity verification, including the role of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), drivers licenses, and biometrics. The conference also addressed social and cultural issues that intersect with identity, including gender identification and non-binary gender issues, surrogacy, and maternity/paternity tracking.

The keynote speaker was Frank Abagnale, a respected authority on forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents (and also the subject of the movie Catch Me If You Can, which profiled his use of forged documents that allowed him to pose as a Pan Am pilot and travel the world). He shared recommendations to protect one’s identity in our rapidly evolving digital world, noting that, in 2017 alone, fraud cost our economy $994 billion in losses.
