Improving Awareness and Use of IIS Among Adult Care Providers

AIRA’s Adult Vaccination Capture in IIS project began in fall 2019 and is funded by a two-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office of the Director for Adult and Influenza Immunization.

Project Goals

AIRA will examine the capacity of IIS to support adult vaccination efforts, including adult vaccination data capture and utilization, through a mix of stakeholder engagement activities (surveys, expert interviews, and virtual meetings). The goals of the project are to:

  • Summarize the landscape of current approaches, systems, and capabilities used to capture adult immunization records in both routine and mass vaccination settings.
  • Develop a three- to five-year Strategic Roadmap with consensus-based strategies and recommendations to improve and advance the awareness, capture, and use of adult immunization data in IIS.

Challenges

While representation of adults in IIS has continued to improve, there are unique challenges that can limit the capacity of IIS to completely capture adult vaccination records, including:

  • The number and variety of providers who vaccinate adults.
  • Immunization program priorities.
  • Resource challenges.
  • Policy limitations and technical considerations.

These challenges have become even more apparent during the COVID-19 vaccine response where various adult populations have been prioritized.
